Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 6, Charlotte Knights 1
Despite splitting the series, the Knights (19-20) fell to one game below .500 after a 6-1 loss to the Jumbo Shrimp (20-19). Left-hander Shane Murphy, making his second Triple-A start since being promoted last week, gave up four runs on two two-run homers over five innings. While Murphy’s ERA splits show trouble in the second inning—where he’s posted a 10.29 ERA and 2.57 WHIP—it’s early days with Charlotte. He allowed his first two runs in the second frame on Sunday.

Charlotte’s offense struggled, managing just four hits and one run. Their only run came in the sixth inning on a bases-loaded groundout double play by Korey Lee. Rikuu Nishida and Mario Camilletti led the attack, with Camilletti reaching base in all four plate appearances (2-for-2 with two walks).
Riley Gowens took over in the sixth and threw a clean 1-2-3 inning, but right-hander Jackson Kelley allowed a two-run double in the seventh to extend Jacksonville’s lead to 6-1. Tyler Gilbert struck out two in the eighth, but the Knights couldn’t mount a comeback, leaving Charlotte with a loss.
Top performers for the Knights: Rikuu Nishida (2B) 1-for-3, R, BB, K; Mario Camilletti (3B) 2-for-2, 2 BB; Riley Gowens (RHRP) 1 IP, 0 H, K; Tyler Gilbert (LHRP) 1 IP, H, 0 R, 2 K.
Struggles for the Knights: Korey Lee (C) 0-for-4, 2 K, GIDP; Josh Breaux (DH) 0-for-3, K, GIDP; Dru Baker (CF) 0-for-3, K; Shane Murphy (LHSP) 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, BB, 2 K, 2 HR, L (1-1).
Knoxville Smokies 7, Birmingham Barons 2
The Barons (14-19) outhit the Smokies (18-15) 8-7 but lost their fourth straight game, 7-2. Birmingham went just 2-for-9 (.222) with runners in scoring position and left five on base, while Smokies pitchers recorded 12 strikeouts without issuing a walk. Birmingham’s bullpen took the blame as Jarold Rosado and Luke Bell allowed all seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, after right-hander Dylan Cumming had tossed six excellent frames. The worst part: Cumming was on track for a win after the Barons took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth.
The sixth inning featured most of Birmingham’s offensive action, including manager Pat Leyland being ejected before the runs scored. Jordan Sprinkle singled but was caught stealing second (his second stolen base attempt of the day). Leyland was tossed immediately after, likely arguing the call. With two outs, Samuel Zavala bunted for a single, stole second, and scored on an RBI double by Alec Makarewicz. A wild pitch moved Makarewicz to third, and he scored on a Smokies third baseman error off a Jacob Burke grounder. Outside of Makarewicz and Sprinkle’s 3-for-4 day, the Barons couldn’t capitalize.
