A stunning goal from Michael Olise secured a 1-0 victory for Bayern Munich against Wolfsburg in the penultimate round of the Bundesliga. While the result was largely inconsequential for the already-crowned champions, it carried enormous weight for the home side, who are battling to avoid relegation in the final stretch of the season.
For Bayern, with the league title already in the bag, the match was more about statistics than stakes. For Wolfsburg, however, starting the day in the relegation playoff spot, the fixture was existential. Dieter Hecking’s side, sitting third from bottom and level on points with 16th-placed St. Pauli, needed a result to keep their survival hopes alive.
Bayern made several changes from the starting XI that faced Paris Saint-Germain midweek. Notable absentees included Colombian winger Luis Díaz, with Senegalese forward Nicolas Jackson taking his place. Also missing were Manuel Neuer, Jonathan Tah, Dayot Upamecano, and Aleksandar Pavlovic.
The visitors dominated possession from the outset, but it was Wolfsburg, defending deep and looking for quick counterattacks, who created the better chances in the first half. The first big opportunity came in the seventh minute when Joakim Maehle’s run down the left led to a close-range header from Vinicius Souza, brilliantly saved by Jonas Urbig. The young goalkeeper appeared eager to stake his claim in the ongoing battle to succeed Neuer.
Urbig made several more impressive stops, including a save against Belocian in the 24th minute and two consecutive denials of Eriksen in the 38th.
Bayern also had their moments in the opening period. Tom Bischof struck the crossbar in the 19th minute, and Harry Kane missed a penalty in the 35th after slipping on a pitch imperfection as he prepared to shoot, sending the ball wide.
After the break, Upamecano replaced Kim Min-jae, and Konrad Laimer came on for Leon Goretzka. Laimer took over at right-back, Josip Stanisic switched to the left, and Bischof pushed forward into midfield.
The second half began with Bayern firmly in control, and they were rewarded in the 55th minute with a superb goal from Olise. The winger produced his trademark move—cutting inside and unleashing a left-footed strike that curled into the top corner.
With Upamecano’s introduction, Bayern’s build-up play from the back improved, and Joshua Kimmich was no longer required to constantly drop deep to collect the ball.
Wolfsburg barely threatened until the 89th minute, when Mattias Svanberg hit the post with a header from a counterattack. A late flurry of pressure failed to produce an equalizer, meaning Wolfsburg will now face a decisive final-day showdown against St. Pauli, and potentially a two-legged playoff against the third-placed team from the 2. Bundesliga to secure their top-flight status.
